We love the Graduate School because we’re older than you think. This week, we’re kicking off our centennial celebration. However, we gave out the first graduate degree at the University of Georgia in 1870! The Graduate School actually was founded 40 years after that.
Our centennial celebrates 100 years of unified graduate education. Our foundation came after a rapid influx of students started pursuing graduate degrees during the Industrial Revolution. The different departments, who prior to the established School made their own requirements for graduation, needed centralization with the increase in students. Thus, the Graduate School was established to solve that problem!
